About
Priyadarshan: A native of Kerala,
Priyadarshan started off as a student in his mentor Appachan’s
Navodaya Studio in Kerala. In 1983, M Mani gave him the break as
the scenarist in his Malayalam film Kuyiline Thedi. His first
film as director was the Malayalam film Oodarathummava Aalariyam.
His forte was comedy themes.
Gradually, he shifted to musicals and psychological dramas. In
1984, he joined hands with Malayalam cinema’s megastar Mohanlal
and directed his second film titled Poochakkoru Mookuthi. After
tasting success in this venture, the duo did more blockbuster
hits like Thalavattam and Chithram in 1986 and Kilukkam in 1988.
His 1984 hit Thenmavin Kombath was remade into Tamil as Muthu
with Rajnikanth in the lead role.
Priyadarshan shifted to Tamil films and made an offbeat romance
film with Karthik and Bhanupriya in the lead roles in 1991
titled Gopura Vasalile and recently Snekithiyae, Leysa Leysa...
The turning point of his career came in 1992 when Pranlal Mehta
introduced Priyadarshan to the Hindi film world for launching
his son Jai Mehta. He churned out a remake of his hit Malayalam
film Kilukkam and called it Muskurahat casting a bubbly Revathi.
His 1993 film Gardish was a remake of a Mohanlal starrer.
In 1996, Priyadarshan directed the bi-lingual national award
winner Sazaa-E-Kaalapani. Viraasat, a remake of Kamal Hasan’s
Devar Magan was a phenomenal hit. In 2000, he made Hera Pheri
with Akshay Kumar and Sunil Shetty in the lead roles.
Priyadarshan has been growing from strength to strength and has
become an expert in churning out remakes of popular films.
