Director
Bharathi Raja: As 1970’s rolled
on another filmmaker came on the movie scene with a bang after
many years of whimper struggle penury and hard work. This young
man from the backwoods of Tamil Nadu, Chinnasami then Bharathi
Raja hit the bull's eye with a thud. After working as assistant
director in many films he made a film on his own "Pathinaru
Vayathinilay" which catapulted him to the sky.
Starring Sridevi, Kamal Hasan and Rajinikanth this film with a
rural background proved immensely popular and it brought to the
screen the odour of the rural soil and earth. Something new, the
film world has not experienced before. Hailed as the new hope of
Tamil cinema by crowds and critics, Bharathi Raja went on to
make individualistic films strong in characterization, story
content and cinematic presentation. As a good technician he
store hard to invest his work with elements of Tamil films a
task in which he has succeeded. He was acknowledged as a
trendsetter, a star on his own and also as a star-maker. In his
films he invariably workers with new faces and brings them to
light, recognition and fame. Successful stars like Radhika,
‘Nizhalgal Ravi’, Pandian, Karthik, Radha and Suganya are his
creations.
His movies Mudhal Mariyadai, Kadalora Kavithaigal, Vedam
Puthithu, Kizhakku Seemaiyile and Karuthamma were great box
office hits. Bharathi Raja films are sold like hot cakes and he
became a kind of icon in the movie industry that many new
filmmakers began to add to their names the word "Raja"!
Almost on the heels of Bharathi Raja came his disciple, writer,
director and actor K.Bhagyaraj with flair for comedy. He has
been making successful films, which seem to evade clear
categorization.
